TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Iranian capital city of Tehran will host the 36th edition of the International Islamic Unity Conference starting Sunday.

International Islamic Unity Conference

Muslim scholars and thinkers from various countries will take part in the religious and political event, which will run until October 14.

It will be held both virtually and in-person, according to the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST).

Just peace and war, Islamic fraternity, countering terrorism, religious free thinking, mutual respect among Islamic schools of thought, Islamic empathy and sympathy, avoiding disrespect, quarrels and insults, avoiding tensions and conflicts, and countering normalization with the Israeli regime are among the main themes of this year’s conference.

The WFPIST annually organizes the conference in the Islamic Unity Week.

More than 160 foreign speakers from 47 countries as well as 120 Iranian figures delivered speeches at the 2021 edition.

The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on October 13 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (Sunday, October 9) as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion as the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
